SMF is forum software written in PHP. It stands for Simple Machines Forum and it allows you to manage a forum on the internet. With the help of SMF, you can easily create a forum on the internet without any programming knowledge. It has all the features you will ever need to manage a forum. More than that, it is very lightweight so it will also provide good performance on small servers too.
Normally when you install any of these open-source management systems on your server, you have to perform many steps. And all of them require technical or some programming knowledge. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to install SMF using Softaculous.
Install SMF using Softaculous
First of all, log in to your cPanel account and click on the Softaculous Apps Installer option under the section with the same name just like the following image. It will redirect you to Softaculous.
In Softaculous, look for SMF in the list of popular applications. And then click on the Install that will appear on hover.
If you can’t find it in the list of popular applications, just search SMF in the search bar given in the left sidebar.
On the installation page, you will see a form that allows you to set basic information about your forum. In the first section, select the protocol, domain, and directory. If you want to install SMF on your domain name, just remove smf from the In directory directive.
In the second section, set the board name and other settings.
In the next section, Enter the admin login information and the language of your forum. After filling up the form, click on the Install button given at the bottom of the page.
It will start the installation process instantly, it might take a few minutes to install SMF on your domain name. Once it is installed, you will get a message just like the following image. You will also get the SMF URL as well as Administration URL.
