EPP stands for Extensible Provisioning Protocol. EPP code also known as: auth code, authorization code, transfer secret, domain secret, etc. EPP code is required when transferring a domain from one registrar to another or changing the owner of the domain. An authorization code is usually a 6 to 16-bit character code assigned by the domain registrar. EPP code acts as an extra security measure when transferring a domain from one registrar to another. EPP code is used as a protection mechanism, so that only the rightful domain owner can control the domain transfer. The EPP key is required when transferring .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us domain names. If the EPP code is not provided these domains .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us cannot be transferred. It is not possible to initiate a domain name transfer for these domains without an EPP code. EPP codes are case sensitive.

EPP codes length can be from 8 to 32 symbols and it should contain at least 1 letter, 1 number and 1 special symbol (such as #, $, %, * etc.). Rules for transferring domains between domain registrar (Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers(ICANN)) states that the EPP code may be sent only to the email address listed in the publicly available whois record for that domain. The whois field list the current domain name registrar. EPP code will require the new registrar to initiate the transfer.

EPP code is also known as, domain name status codes. It indicates the status of a domain name registration. Every domain has at least one status code, but can also have more than one. There exist two different EPP status codes: client and server codes. Client status codes are set by the registrars and the server status codes are set by the registries. Both status codes are displayed when we run a whois lookup of the domain.

The EPP status are explained below: –

ACTIVE/OK: – This status is set by the registry. The domain can be modified and renewed. The domain will be included in the zone.

REGISTRY-LOCK: – This status is set by the registry. The domain cannot be modified or deleted and the domain can be renewed. The domain will be included in the zone.

REGISTRAR-LOCK: –This status is set by the sponsoring registrar. The domain can be renewed, but it cannot be modified or deleted. The domain will be included in the zone.

REGISTRY-HOLD: –The registry sets this status. The domain can be renewed, but it cannot be modified or deleted by the registrar. The domain will not be included in the zone.

REGISTRAR-HOLD: –The sponsoring registrar sets this status. The domain cannot be modified or deleted. The domain will not be included in the zone.

REDEMPTIONPERIOD: –The registry sets this status when a registrar requests that the domain name be deleted from the registry. The domain cannot be modified, it can only restored. The domain will not be included in the zone.

PENDINGRESTORE: –The registry sets this status after a registrar requests restoration of a domain that is in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The domain will be included in the zone.

PENDINGDELETE: – The registry sets this status after a domain has been set in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status and the domain has not been restored by the registrar. The domain will not be included in the zone.
